Hamilton says Ferrari contract runs through 2027 with 2028 option

Hamilton future

Lewis Hamilton said his Ferrari deal gave him room to keep racing, but he would not stretch his Formula 1 career past the point where his pace dropped off. Hamilton said his current Ferrari contract left him with another season and an option beyond that. He said he was “built differently” and still “all in” on racing. He also left the door open to keep going for a long time if he stayed competitive.

At the same time, Hamilton drew a hard line. Hamilton said his reaction time and pace were still strong and that age had not slowed his reactions. He added that he did not know how long he would still be competing.

That mix of confidence and restraint framed his view of what came next. He was not talking like a driver who saw an immediate exit. He was talking like one who wanted control over the timing and wanted the final decision to come from his speed, not his calendar.

Ferrari priorities

Hamilton said he had recovered from a difficult first season with Ferrari and felt he had settled into a stronger run. He pointed to his win in Barcelona as part of that rebound, saying this campaign had looked far better than the last one. The target was bigger than his own line on the timing sheets.

Hamilton said his priority was helping Ferrari secure second place in the Constructors’ Championship. He said the fight for second in the drivers’ standings was not his main focus, even though he sat third and was one point behind George Russell. That gap kept him in the mix, but he made clear the team result mattered more than the individual chase.

Hamilton also said Ferrari could be competitive in Mexico’s high-altitude conditions, a sign that the team still saw specific races as chances to score strongly. The message was plain. He wanted Ferrari to finish the season with momentum and a higher place in the standings. His own position mattered only as far as it helped that push.

Hamilton test bench

Hamilton said the final five races would work as a test bench for the future, giving Ferrari a chance to measure what it needed from the next car and from its long-term direction. He did not treat the stretch as a simple runout. He treated it as a chance to gather useful answers.

That balance between ambition and self-checking also shaped his view of what came next.

He even floated the African Grand Prix in Rwanda as a possible target down the line, a hint that he still saw room for new goals if the speed remained. For now, though, his focus stayed on the final stretch, the Ferrari project and the form that kept future options alive.
