Spanish police allegedly put FIA-accredited photographer Peter Fox in a chokehold at the Spanish Grand Prix after he tried to reach the podium through a passageway reserved for accredited media and photographers. The incident happened off-track just before the podium ceremony, and photos and a brief video posted on social media showed Fox restrained on the ground. Fox worked for Getty Images and Williams Racing, and he was wearing Williams team clothing and carrying an accreditation badge at the time. The reason for the police response was not immediately known.
Fox was unable to photograph the podium ceremony after the incident. Some of his equipment was reportedly damaged.
Social media response
The scene drew attention online after fellow photographer and journalist Daniel Atan posted a photo of what had happened. One clip of the incident was viewed more than half a million times.
Fellow F1 photographer Jamey Price defended Fox online. The online response centered on Fox’s treatment and the access route he was using. With the reason for the police response still unclear, the reaction focused on the images and clips from the scene.
