The Sepang decision
Raul Fernandez was cleared to ride first practice in Malaysia, then was declared unfit after the session and ruled out of the rest of the Malaysian Grand Prix at Sepang. He had already been fighting through a finger injury he picked up in the Indonesian Grand Prix, when he suffered fractures in two fingers. He said he feels worse now than he did when he broke those fingers in Indonesia three weeks ago, and he also said he is in worse shape than he was in Australia. He still managed to finish on the podium in Indonesia, but he was unable to continue in Malaysia after first practice. The Malaysian circuit made the situation more difficult because of its harder braking zones, and Fernandez said the track could complicate his recovery.
Fernandez recovery
Fernandez has made it clear that his priority is getting his fingers healthy, not chasing the championship fight. He said he does not want to take unnecessary risks because the index finger matters so much for braking, which puts the injury at the center of every decision he makes on the bike. He said he may stop if the pain or the condition of his hand leaves him unable to control the bike the way he needs to. Fernandez said the pain in his hand and ribs is part of the recovery process. He also warned that another setback could force him to miss the final races of the season, a possibility that gives his recovery added urgency. He wants to heal first, avoid taking risks that could make the injury worse and make sure he is safe before he thinks about anything else.
