Sammy Smith wins Progress Group 250 at Talladega over teammate Carson Kvapil

NXTbets Pro | Published On: October 24, 2026

Talladega qualifying pace

Jesse Love showed the speed again at Talladega Superspeedway, winning the pole for the Progress Group 250 by 0.002 seconds over Jake Finch. The run gave Love his fifth straight Talladega pole and his 12th career O’Reilly Auto Parts Series pole, another strong mark at a track that has repeatedly put him at the front of the field. Sam Mayer qualified third, Carson Kvapil was fourth and Austin Hill came in fifth. Rajah Caruth qualified sixth and Anthony Alfredo rolled off seventh. Corey Day posted the 10th-fastest speed, then was set to start from the rear.

The rest of the qualifying picture also carried weight at a superspeedway where track position can matter but is never the whole story. Lavar Scott, Patrick Emerling and Carson Ware failed to qualify. Lee Pulliam never got a time on the board after a brake issue on pit road ended his chance to make the field. The lineup set the stage for a 94-lap race with stage breaks scheduled for laps 25 and 50, a format that left little room for mistakes and put a premium on survival, timing and drafting partners.

Race result

Smith turned the race into a teammate battle and came out on top, beating Kvapil by 0.084 seconds to win the Progress Group 250. Kvapil led a race-high 67 laps and had the kind of control that usually puts a driver in position to close the deal at Talladega. Smith found the opening he needed late and made it count, taking the victory in a finish that stayed tight all the way to the line. The result gave Smith the headline win of the day and put a sharp edge on a race that featured both speed at the front and constant pressure from the draft behind it.

Kvapil’s lead total made him one of the central figures of the event, but Smith had the final say when it mattered most. Talladega often turns races into a test of patience, positioning and timing, and this one followed that pattern. Love, who had set the tone in qualifying, finished third at the end of the race. That gave him another strong result at a track where he has already built a major record on the front row. The finish also confirmed how quickly control can shift at a superspeedway, where one late move can erase a long stretch of dominance.

Championship battle

The championship fight tightened again after Talladega, but Love still left the track as the points leader with 2,401 points. Justin Allgaier stayed second in the standings, 19 points behind Love. Corey Day moved to third, 29 points back, while Sheldon Creed sat fourth, 50 points behind. Kvapil climbed to fifth, 59 points back, and Sam Mayer held sixth, 96 points back. With two races remaining, every stage point, every finish and every late-race decision now carries added weight for the drivers still in the hunt.

The standings reflect how little separation remains near the top. Love’s third-place finish kept him in control of the points lead, but the margin is still close enough to keep the pressure on. Allgaier remains within one race of the top spot. Day and Creed are close enough to turn a strong run into a major swing, and Kvapil’s runner-up finish kept him squarely in the picture after leading the most laps. Mayer also stayed within striking distance despite not taking the checkered flag. Talladega delivered one win, one close finish and a standings board that leaves the championship unresolved heading into the final stretch.
