Formula 1 fans in the United States have a second team to cheer for in 2026, as Cadillac completes the grid. That news has circulated since March, but now we know who will pilot their vehicles next season. Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez are the chosen ones to bring this project to life on the track and create a sustainable future for the team. The Detroit company will run their operations from Silverstone for now, joining the majority of their rivals in the United Kingdom. Valtteri Bottas is a popular figure in Formula 1, loved for his humor and laid-back attitude, but also for his unmistakable mustache. The Finn is well-versed in the art of single-seater driving, with 12 years of F1 racing under his belt. He did alright for himself in that time, standing on the rostrum 67 times and making 10 trips inside Victory Lane. He found himself out of a job at the end of 2024 when Sauber replaced him and his teammate Zhou Guanyu.

Sauber’s loss was Mercedes’ gain, who snapped up Valtteri as a reserve driver to support the efforts of rising star Kimi Antonelli, who has already found his way onto the podium in his rookie season. The veteran is a highly marketable driver, even building a loyal fanbase as far afield as Australia and featuring on a commercial for Uber Carshare Down Under. His commercial appeal will provide Cadillac with a base from which to build a financially sustainable team in the years ahead.

Many fans felt Sergio Perez was handed a raw deal when Red Bull Racing axed him for the second seat in the team. The challenges remain at his former workplace, while he is off to enjoy a reported $10 million a year at Cadillac. Checo always played second fiddle to Max Verstappen, but he’s an accomplished individual with 39 podium finishes behind him, including six victories. However, before the Mexican raced for the Milton-Keynes garage, he was a dominant navigator in the midfield for almost 10 years. He piloted vehicles for Sauber, McLaren, Mercedes, Force India, and Racing Point before joining RBR.

Perez is an interesting commercial case because he gives Cadillac access to a gigantic Latin American market, currently dominated by Franco Colapinto and Gabriel Bortoleto, but Perez will snatch the loyalty of Mexicans, the second-largest economy in the region. It’s widely reported that the company Escudería Telmex paid RBR up to $130 million between 2021 and 2024 during Checco’s tenure.

The Renault Connection

Cadillac has drafted a robust team of experienced Formula 1 minds who’ve been there and done that. Many of the names found themselves in the Renault garage at one point or another, starting with the Chief Technical Officer, Nick Chester. He headed up Vehicle Performance in 2005 and 2006, the years when Fernando Alonso won his two Drivers’ Championships. Next, there is Pat Symonds, who had the honor of working with Ayrton Senna and Michael Schumacher, winning 32 races, four Drivers’ and three Constructors’ Championships.

Robert White moves into the COO role at Cadillac F1 after a colorful career in the sport. He too cut his teeth at Renault, where he was responsible for the design, development, and racing of the successful 3.0L V10 and 2.4L V8 engines that won Renault and Red Bull six Drivers’ Championships between 2005 and 2013. Peter Crolla will work closely with the team’s drivers as the Race Team Manager. He’s not a Renault alumnus and instead found his way to the newest F1 team via McLaren and Haas.

Final Thoughts

We are excited to see two dearly beloved F1 drivers returning to the grid next season. It’s never an easy feat working with a new team, but it looks like Cadillac is taking the correct measures to start its journey off on the correct track. The announcement that Valtteri Bottas and Sergio Perez will drive for the US-branded F1 team highlights the team’s preference for tried and tested veterans over youth, and not just any veterans. These are two drivers who know how to win and, at the very least, remain competitive.

F1 is a team sport after all, and Cadillac has appointed an experienced leadership team who have won Drivers’ and Constructors’ Championships and worked with greats in the sport like Senna, Schumacher, and Alonso. The garage is putting the right structures in place, but can the execute its mandate and deliver a competitive car in 2026? We’ll have to wait patiently to find out.
