Williams FW48 flops as 2026 recovery work begins

Williams FW48
Williams entered the season with momentum from last year, when it finished fifth in the constructors’ standings and put podium finishes on the board. The early results this year have told a different story. The FW48 arrived late, missed Barcelona’s private shakedown and opened the campaign overweight and off the pace. That left Williams chasing fixes from the start, and the gap to the front has stayed wide enough to shape everything else the team is doing. Williams had only 11 points through the first 11 races and had gone scoreless since Monaco. Even when the car reached an upgrade stage, the problems did not disappear. At the Hungarian Grand Prix, Fernando Alonso’s improved Aston Martin finished ahead of both Williams cars, a blunt sign of where the team stands in the pecking order when the field is close and the margins matter.
Sainz and Albon
Carlos Sainz has called Williams’ season an eye-opener, and his results have shown both the promise and the limits inside the garage. He delivered podium finishes for the team in Azerbaijan and Qatar, but he also said Williams has fallen farther from the front than it expected. Sainz pointed to the car’s overweight build and its underperformance as proof that plenty of work still sits ahead. He also said a turnaround is possible, though it will take time, budget-cap money and detailed analysis to get there. Alex Albon has reached the same conclusion from the cockpit. He described the current Williams as overweight, unbalanced and frustrating to drive, which fits the picture of a team that can still pick up strong results on certain weekends but cannot yet rely on the car across a full race run. The contrast is clear. Williams has flashes of pace and a pair of podiums from Sainz, but it has also spent too much of the season fighting the basics of grip, balance and efficiency.
Vowles and future
James Vowles has been the most direct about the scale of the problem. He said the FW48 is a flop and cannot be fully fixed this season. Williams is already focused on correcting the car’s worst handling traits and building a better platform for the future, which has shifted the balance of the technical effort away from short-term rescue and toward longer-term recovery. Albon said the planned upgrade package for the Azerbaijan Grand Prix is unlikely to solve everything because so much of the team’s work is already centered on next year’s car. That leaves Williams in a difficult but familiar position for a rebuilding team, trying to patch the current machine while the bigger gains sit in the next design cycle. The team is already working on its 2027 Formula 1 car, a sign that Williams views the current project as only part of a wider reset. The challenge now is to keep the season alive, keep collecting data and keep moving the platform forward, even if the full answer will come much later than the team wanted.
