TadejPogačar extended his lead over Jonas Vingegaard, but the Dane once again gave it his all and tested the Slovenian. The stage proved chaotic towards the backend of the day with multiple breakaways vying for the stage win. Eventually, Australian Ben O’Connor made his move on the Col de la Loze pass and opened a lead on the original breakaway. Vingegaard’s henchman responded to the break by upping the pace, and TadejPogačar was forced to go along with the Team Visma | Lease a Bike contingent, without any of his colleagues in support. Their fightback was too little too late as O’Connor reached the summit 1:45 ahead of a flying Pogi in second and Jonas just behind.
General Classification
Pogačar extended his advantage over Vingegaard in the closing yards of the stage. The yellow jersey leader launched an attack towards the summit, adding 11 seconds to his GC lead. The UAE Team Emirates XRG superstar now sits 4:26 ahead of his perennial rival with three stages to go in the 112th edition of the Tour.
King of the Mountains
Lenny Martinez set out to recapture the polka shirt from Pogi, and his efforts looked promising after reaching Col du Glandon. He collected 20 points, took the virtual lead. That’s the closest the Frenchman would come to achieving his goal before Pogačar entered the picture. The Slovenian captured 45 points on the two remaining climbs to lead the King of the Mountains chase by 16 points from Jonas Vingegaard.
Points Classification
After his stage win yesterday, Jonathan Milan got back on the bike and powered through the intermediate sprint, adding 20 more units to his tally. The Italian is now 75 points clear of Pogi in the green jersey contest with only three stages remaining.
Youth Classification
The youth classification remains one of the last close battles of the Tour. At one stage today, Florian Lipowitz looked like he was on course for the stage win and would move into second in the GC. Instead, he was fighting for survival up the final climb. The German started the stage, 2:01 ahead of Oscar Onley, and will start stage 19 with a 22-second buffer. These two riders are also locked in a battle for the final spot on the rostrum in the General Classification.
