Aprilia ran a private test at Jerez of its 2027 850cc MotoGP prototype, two days after the official post-race test, and released photos and video of the session. Test rider Lorenzo Savadori completed the prototype’s first on-track laps in wet conditions, and Aprilia said the engine had been running since the previous year. The private outing followed public 2027 shakedowns by KTM, Honda and Ducati, and Yamaha remained the only factory not to have publicly showcased a new 2027 bike, an early M1 prototype believed to have run privately in Japan. Savadori, who retired from the Jerez Sprint after contact with Toprak Razgatlioglu, said he would test new parts over the weekend that Aprilia planned to pass to factory riders Marco Bezzecchi and Jorge Martin.
The prototype displayed 2027-spec aerodynamic revisions, including a revised nose profile and a protruding front wing. Aprilia also fitted a novel flow diverter nicknamed “elephant ears,” two wing elements mounted at the sides of the front fairing that create a third tier of aerodynamic surfaces, and the team had introduced new upper-fairing winglets on the RS-GP26 during the official Jerez test.
Aprilia’s aero program, led by technical boss Fabiano Sterlacchini and aero head Marco De Luca, gathered additional data using a tail-mounted “satellite” sensor as the team sought to refine designs amid concerns that current aerodynamic concepts may be nearing performance limits. The outing was framed as part of broader development ahead of the 2027 rules change that will shift MotoGP to an 850cc formula, switch from Michelin to Pirelli tires, impose tighter aerodynamic limits, ban ride-height devices and require 100 percent non-fossil-origin fuel. The prototype’s track runs followed extensive bench testing and Pirelli tire work alongside Aprilia’s current 1000cc RS-GP, and the updates come amid lingering controversy over Aprilia’s earlier “leg wing” concept, which rivals largely copied and which Aprilia showed yielded measurable gains, with Aprilia leading the 2026 championship and locked in an aero arms race with Ducati as the two manufacturers compete for the 2026 title.
Motor racing is back and it all starts in the “Land of Smiles” on Friday, February 28th. Defending Rider’s Champion Jorge Martin sits on the sidelines for at least the first two races of the campaign after suffering multiple fractures during a recent training ride. With that breaking news out of the way, here is …
Marc Márquez said he is convinced he will be back in the MotoGP fight at Aragon after a difficult Silverstone weekend exposed lingering problems in his right arm and left him 40 points behind championship leader Jorge Martin. Márquez said Silverstone was his worst weekend since shoulder surgery in May, and he believes the extra two weeks of recovery should put him much closer to the front group and in contention in both the Sprint and Sunday race at MotorLand Aragon.
He said he needs to manage his energy more carefully on Fridays after realizing he had pushed too hard at Silverstone, where he was frustrated by what he described as having no control over his right arm. Márquez linked the issue to the seven surgeries on his right shoulder and said he had expected to feel better after the summer break. He also said he must beat the fast Aprilia riders to stay in the title fight, even as Aprilia’s Ai Ogura withdrew from the weekend after a hand injury in training.
Aragon offers Márquez one of his best chances to recover ground. The circuit has brought him eight career wins, including seven in MotoGP, and over the past two years he has taken pole and won both the Sprint and the Grand Prix there. He said the layout suits both his riding style and the Ducati, and Francesco Bagnaia also said he expects to be near the leaders at a track that was special to him for his first premier-class win and first victory with Ducati in 2021.
Aprilia’s early-season surge has become the defining story heading into the Americas Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas. Marco Bezzecchi leads the MotoGP championship after winning the Grands Prix in Thailand and Brazil, and Aprilia produced a 1-2 in Brazil with teammate Jorge Martín second; that Brazil 1-2 moved Martín into second overall and leaves Aprilia riders occupying four of the top seven championship positions. Reports from Brazil credited Aprilia’s setup, consistency and race management as decisive factors as the title fight unfolds.
That momentum makes COTA a key test for Marc Márquez and his Ducati team. The reigning world champion — a seven-time winner at the Circuit of the Americas — has shown strong sprint pace (he won the Brazil sprint and was second in the Thailand sprint) but has not reached a Sunday MotoGP podium so far this season and sits fifth in the standings. Márquez arrives in Austin after two recent Grand Prix crashes, and Ducati has struggled early in the year to place a Desmosedici on an overall podium; pundits see this weekend as a pivotal chance to judge whether Márquez can rebound and whether Aprilia’s early surge represents a lasting shift in the balance of power.
