After four seasons plying his trade as a professional bull rider, Cameron Delano will make his Bare Knuckle Fighting Championship debut June 21. Despite only training for a little more than four months, Delano is confident he’ll be victorious in the ring at Dickie’s Arena in Forth Worth, TX against Jesse Desrosier.
“I’m going to knock him out,” he said. “No doubt.”
Never Shies Away From a Fight
Delano isn’t one to shy away from a challenge or a fight. In middle school, he’d often take on high schoolers who would bully his older brother.
“I’ve always been a scrappy guy,” he said. “I’ve always been a fighter at heart; that’s what I love to do. My family will tell you Cameron is one of those guys, just don’t get him mad, and everything is okay because I do have a different side of me.”
Fighting high schoolers is a little different than what he’ll see in the ring in a few weeks, and the training is unlike his PBR training.
A Lifestyle Change
Instead of weightlifting, Delano’s focus has been cardio and high-intensity training to drop his weight. He was 201 pounds in April and after four weeks weighed 183. He’ll fight at 175.
“It’s been a different diet,” he said. “It’s been a big part in this because you just eat kind of whatever you want when you ride bulls. Recently, I’ve been on a certain calorie diet, a certain carb diet, only eating certain foods, which has been hard because I love energy drinks, and I had to cut out a lot of them, unfortunately.
“I’ve been training twice a day for about the last three weeks. I definitely have more respect for fighters now.”
The Jesse Desrosier Fight
Delano has been watching the limited film of Desrosier’s amateur MMA fights, since he will also make his BKFC debut in Fort Worth in late June. Desrosier, who is part of the Blackfoot Nation, a Native American tribe known to live in the Rocky Mountains, lives in Valens, MT.
“He has the experience over me because he has eight or so documented fights,” he said. “He’s been in combat sports for like 12 years. He doesn’t have any pro fights, but that doesn’t mean anything at the end of the day. I’ve seen some really good amateur guys.
“We don’t know how tall he is, so I’ve been sparring guys all different sizes. I think we’re pretty comfortable.” The point is to be adaptable and deal with any challenge your opponent puts up. It’s the only way that Delano will transform from a cowboy gimmick to a serious contender in the eyes of BKFC fans.
Keeping a Low Profile
Film may be limited on Desrosier, but it doesn’t exist for Delano, which he’s using to his advantage.
“The only stuff that I posted is my older stuff,” he said. “If you look at my Instagram, it’s the stuff where I looked sloppy, and didn’t really know what I was doing. I was just starting, so I wanted to post it, and that’s why I haven’t really shared any updated training videos. I don’t want them to know how I’m moving.”
American Top Team - Atlanta, GA
Delano, from Liberty, SC, has been training in his hometown and driving roughly 130 miles on weekends to train at American Top Team in Atlanta, GA. He’s faced three pro fighters in his sparring and beat one.
“They came up to my coach and asked, ‘How many pro fights does he have? How many years has he been boxing?’ ” he said. “My coach is like, ‘He’s been sparring four weeks.’ He was shocked. And my coach in South Carolina has told me the same thing. The amount of development I’ve had in four weeks is crazy, and it must be because of that athletic ability and that determination.
Proving a Point
“I’m taking this seriously. I think a lot of people think I might just be coming into this to get exposure, but I earned that in my PBR days. Obviously, I like the whole cross-promotion approach, but to me, it’s more about wanting to prove to myself that I can go out there and dominate in another sport beyond the bucking chute.”
Cameron Delano’s Entry into BKFC
Delano’s transition from PBR to BKFC came to be somewhat by accident. A podcast host who covered BKFC asked Delano, who was a guest on an episode in January, if he was interested in the league.
After meeting with BKFC founder David Feldman to set up this fight against Desrosier, Delano has received interest from Mike “Platinum” Perry (5-0), a former UFC competitor, and Bryce Hall (1-0), who has 30 million followers across Instagram and TikTok.
“If I win on debut, I’m getting on the mic and I’m calling out Bryce Hall,” said Delano. “And they’re making that fight happen.”
