He said he was very ill during the event, described the weekend as “awful” and said he stayed unwell for several days after leaving Zandvoort. Verstappen said he used the week between races to rest and recover, then spoke at Monza on Thursday ahead of the Italian Grand Prix.
The recovery matters because Verstappen arrives at a high-speed track with Red Bull trying to reset its approach. His comments were plain. He said the team needed to move forward with a clear view of what Monza asks of a car and driver. The focus now shifts from getting him healthy again to getting the package ready for a circuit where energy management will be important.
Red Bull realism
Verstappen said Red Bull must be realistic about its chances at the Italian Grand Prix. He said the team first needs to understand the energy-management demands of Monza’s high-speed circuit before it can think about a strong result. He also said he does not expect “miracles” because the current 50-50 engine-and-battery format makes energy management difficult. That leaves Red Bull with a measured outlook instead of bold predictions.
He also said other teams are bringing upgrades, while Red Bull is trying to learn more about the car for next year. That points to two tracks running at once for the team, one tied to the race weekend in front of it and another tied to the longer development picture. The immediate challenge is Monza and its demanding layout. The larger task is using each race to gather information for next year. Verstappen’s comments suggested Red Bull is treating both goals as part of the same push.
Monza lineup
Red Bull is set to race Liam Lawson alongside Verstappen again at Monza. That keeps the team’s driver lineup steady for the Italian Grand Prix. Isack Hadjar remains sidelined with a wrist injury, which keeps him out of the lineup for now. Yuki Tsunoda is set to get another Racing Bulls drive, giving the team another change in its wider driver pool.
Ferrari is also expected to arrive with an upgraded power unit at Monza, adding another layer to a weekend already shaped by development work across the grid. For Red Bull, the line from Verstappen was simple. The team needs to understand the circuit, manage expectations and keep learning. The combination of a tough track, rival upgrades and a changing driver picture gives the Italian Grand Prix a practical edge before the cars even hit the timing sheets.
