Ferrari reliability edge
Ferrari left Silverstone with a clear boost in its title fight, and Charles Leclerc led the way. Ferrari beat Mercedes at the British Grand Prix and scored 40 points, a return that underlined how much the team’s reliability has mattered in 2026. The upgraded power unit Ferrari introduced in Austria appeared to sharpen its competitiveness at a track that was expected to suit it less. Ferrari also handled the race well enough to win even after showing a straight-line speed weakness that both Mercedes drivers noticed. Lewis Hamilton said that consistency has become one of Ferrari’s biggest strengths this season, pointing to the team’s processes, pit stops and factory preparation. He said that if the reliability keeps holding, it can become a meaningful competitive edge across the rest of the year. That matters because Mercedes still appeared to have the stronger overall car in the W17, but Ferrari keeps finding ways to turn clean weekends into points and pressure. Leclerc’s win at Silverstone gave that case more weight.
Mercedes reliability woes
Mercedes left Silverstone with pace, but it also left with another reminder of how costly reliability problems have been in 2026. Kimi Antonelli took pole position at Silverstone and fought for the win before a dislodged wheel shield and a track-limits penalty sent him tumbling to 15th. George Russell finished second, helped by the Safety Car and Max Verstappen’s crash, but the result still came against the backdrop of a season that has repeatedly punished Mercedes. Russell had already lost a likely win in Canada when a battery issue ended his race while he was leading. Antonelli also failed to finish in Barcelona. Mercedes has had a broken wheel shield at Silverstone, a battery retirement in Canada and another DNF for Antonelli in Barcelona, a run of setbacks that has kept the team from cashing in on its speed. Current component usage also shows a divided picture. Ferrari and Mercedes are tied on key power-unit parts, Ferrari has used more MGU-K units and Mercedes has used more exhaust components. Russell and Antonelli also saw Ferrari’s straight-line speed weakness at Silverstone, and Russell said it helped him keep Hamilton behind.
Hamilton sees opening
Hamilton framed the situation in blunt terms. He said Ferrari has been more reliable than Mercedes this year and that Mercedes has not matched Ferrari’s consistency. He also warned that Mercedes could face grid penalties before the end of the season if engine and battery problems continue, a threat that adds more pressure to a team already chasing cleaner weekends. Anthony Davidson backed that view, saying Mercedes’ reliability issues have opened the door for Ferrari to fight for the championship and calling Ferrari’s machinery bulletproof. Toto Wolff also came away from Silverstone with a direct message for his own team. He said Mercedes needs to look at itself after the race and added that Ferrari could be a serious threat for the rest of 2026. Andrew Shovlin described Mercedes’ development path as one built on smaller performance gains rather than one major upgrade package, a method that keeps the team in the fight but also leaves little room for setbacks. The points gap after Silverstone reflected that picture. Russell sat 25 points behind Antonelli, Hamilton was 32 behind Antonelli and Leclerc was 46 behind Antonelli. Ferrari may not have the cleanest car in outright terms, but its reliability gives it a real route back into the championship battle.
