Justin Cooper out of SMX Playoffs after concussion recovery

NXTbets Pro | Published On: September 10, 2026

Playoff decision

Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing kept Justin Cooper out of the three-round SMX World Championship Playoffs. The team said he did not have enough time on the bike to prepare after a concussion, leaving him on the sidelines for the postseason. The decision made recovery the priority over racing.

Yamaha framed the decision around Cooper’s long-term fitness and 2027 season. Team manager Wil Hahn said the goal was to help Cooper get back fighting up front, putting the emphasis on his health and preparation rather than immediate playoff results.

Justin Cooper recovery

Cooper’s setback started with a crash at Hangtown during round 2 of the Pro Motocross Championship, where he suffered a concussion. The injury forced him out for multiple races. He spent time recovering before returning to racing at Unadilla, where he finished ninth overall. Cooper then sat out the remaining rounds after Unadilla.

The bike-time issue remained central. Cooper wanted to race in Ohio, but said he was not ready to compete at the level he expected and did not feel he had enough bike time to race at his best. The team reached the same conclusion ahead of the playoffs.

Justin Cooper future

The next step for Cooper was clear. Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing said he would rest and focus on being fully healthy for the 2027 SMX season. The team said he was focused on his 2027 campaign, while Cooper planned to recover to full fitness before next season.
