The Margaret River Pro surf event has come to a close with Gabriel Medina from Brazil and Carissa Moore from Hawaii emerging victorious in the men’s and women’s categories, respectively.
The competition, which was the fifth stop on the World Surf League (WSL) 2023 Championship Tour (CT), was held in Western Australia and featured solid four-to-six-foot surf at Main Break.
Medina’s win in the men’s category marks his first CT event victory since 2021. He dominated the final, achieving a high heat total of 17.50 out of a possible 20 and earning a near-perfect score of 9.50 out of 10, defeating Griffin Colapinto from the United States in the final.
Medina had previously beaten World Champion Filipe Toledo and World No. 1 Joao Chianca in the quarterfinals and semifinals, respectively. With this win, Medina has earned his 17th CT career event victory and moved up to World No. 7 in the rankings.
Meanwhile, Carissa Moore earned her 27th overall CT career win and her second event win of the season after defeating Tyler Wright from Australia in the women’s final. Moore, who is a five-time World Champion, now has a third Margaret River win to her name. With this victory, Moore has moved up to World No. 2 in the rankings, while Wright now holds the top spot.
The event also saw Tyler Wright from Australia earning a runner-up finish, which will see her wearing the yellow Leader jersey going into Stop No. 6, the Surf Ranch Pro. Joao Chianca from Brazil held onto the top spot on the rankings with his semifinal finish, while Griffin Colapinto’s runner-up finish moved him up to World No. 4.
The top 22 men and top 10 women who have made it through the Mid-season Cut will continue competing through the back half of the 2023 CT season. The competitors will now focus on making it to the Final 5 to compete at the WSL Rip Curl Finals and have a shot at the 2023 World Title.
Overall, the event was a thrilling competition that showcased the talent of some of the world’s best surfers. As the CT season continues, fans can look forward to more exciting competitions and upsets in the world of surfing.
