Danner Wins Silver Crown at Springfield

Danner takes Bettenhausen

Briggs Danner won the USAC Silver Crown Bettenhausen 100 at the Illinois State Fairgrounds in Springfield, Illinois, after taking the lead from Justin Grant on lap 88 and holding it to the finish. The race was shortened to 96 laps from the scheduled 100 because of time constraints, and that left Danner with a narrow stretch to turn his move into a victory. Grant had controlled the race from the start and led the first 87 laps, but Danner made the decisive pass when the race reached its closing phase. From there, he stayed out front for the final nine laps and finished the job. The result changed the shape of the event late, with the lead shifting from the driver who had paced almost the entire race to the driver who made the last move. Grant’s long run at the front ended with a 16th-place finish, a sharp drop after so many laps in control. Danner’s win came in a race that asked for patience and timing, and he found both at the right moment. The front of the field did not settle until the final portion of the race, and once Danner got ahead, he kept the pace steady through the end.

Grant leads early

The race opened with Grant setting the tone and staying in command while the rest of the field chased him. Danner stayed close enough to capitalize when the chance came, and his move on lap 88 changed the outcome after Grant had spent the entire race up to that point in first. The event also included two early flips that added to the churn at the start. Bret Tripplett flipped on lap 1, and Joey Moughan flipped on the lap 1 restart. Those incidents came before the race settled into its long stretch under time pressure and before the battle for the lead took full shape. Once the green-flag rhythm held, the main story became the duel at the front, with Grant protecting the lead for as long as he could and Danner waiting for the right opening. The shortened distance kept the leaders from having much room to recover after the late pass, and Danner made sure the race did not swing back in Grant’s direction. The opening-lap trouble did not decide the winner, but it helped define a race that kept moving from one pressure point to the next. By the time the field reached the final laps, the focus had narrowed to whether Grant could hold on or Danner could finish the move.

Leary stays points

Jake Swanson finished second, Jerry Coons Jr. took third, C.J. Leary finished fourth and Saban Bibent rounded out the top five. Those results gave the race a clear podium behind Danner and showed how much ground Grant lost after leading the first 87 laps. Swanson claimed the runner-up spot after the late reshuffling at the front, while Coons stayed in the mix long enough to secure third. Leary added another strong finish with fourth, and Bibent completed the top five. The points picture also stayed tight at the top of the USAC Silver Crown standings. Leary remained the leader with 482 points, Grant followed with 413 and Mario Clouser sat third with 374. That order kept Leary in front of the championship chase even with Danner leaving Springfield with the win. The series now heads to Du Quoin State Fairgrounds for its next race, giving the top drivers another chance to change the standings. Leary’s lead, Grant’s chase and Clouser’s place in third give the championship a clear shape entering the next stop, while Danner’s victory adds another name to the list of drivers who can influence the title fight.
