Friday data flags heavy degradation at Spanish Grand Prix

Pirelli: Heavy degradation at Spanish GP makes two-stop race likely

NXTbets Pro | Published On: June 15, 2026

Tire degradation data

Friday practice data from Pirelli flagged heavy tire degradation at Barcelona, with the company warning that thermal decay will shape the race. Pirelli ran a one-step softer selection for the event, bringing the C2, C3 and C4 compounds to the track. Track temperatures climbed into the 50s Celsius, and qualifying ran in about 30C air on a roughly 53C surface, conditions that magnified heat buildup. Pirelli chief engineer Simone Berra said degradation was higher than expected and described unexpectedly strong thermal decay through runs. Long-run work on the medium C3 showed roughly three tenths of a second lost per lap over the first 10 to 12 laps, with lap times dropping off more sharply after that window. The combination of hotter-than-usual surface temps and softer compound choices produced an obvious drop in performance across long runs, and teams left sessions with clearer evidence that tire life will be tighter than usual.

Race strategy implications

Pirelli now thinks the most likely race plan will require at least two pit stops, and it rates Medium-Hard-Hard as the default strategy. The firm also listed Medium-Hard-Medium, Medium-Hard-Soft and Soft-Medium-Hard as plausible alternatives. Pirelli put the first pit window between laps 15 and 21 and the second between laps 38 and 44, a sequence that fits the observed early fade on the C3. The company added that a three-stop approach could become viable if teams commit to hard early pace, but it expects that option to be reactive rather than the starting blueprint. Friday practice suggested the hard tire is not an obvious favorite for stint durability, which complicates baseline planning. Teams responded by saving tire sets specifically for race day, a clear sign they expect strategy to shift during the event. Barcelona’s layout of high-speed, long-radius corners increases overheating risk, and running in dirty air behind other cars will make managing that heat more difficult. Those track characteristics raise the premium on smart stint timing and conserving rubber in traffic.

Track position importance

The race promises to be tactical, with tire wear likely to trump outright pace and overtaking difficulty making track position vital. Barcelona is a circuit where passing is hard, so an early advantage or a well-timed stop can decide finishing order when compounds fall away quickly. Pirelli also identified less obvious variables that could swing outcomes, including differences in rim design and team setup choices, factors that will influence how each car handles thermal load and degradation. Drivers echoed the technical picture. George Russell said a one-stop strategy is not possible at all for the race, a blunt assessment that underlines how extreme the tire falloff appears. Lewis Hamilton noted Ferrari’s degradation ran roughly double the team’s forecast, a data point that shows some crews will have to revise expectations midweekend. With heat, compound choice and setup interacting, teams that manage tires and preserve track position will hold the clearest path to a strong result.
