Aldeguer withdraws from Dutch GP after T7 fracture

Aldeguer crash

Gresini Racing rider Fermín Aldeguer withdrew from the Dutch Grand Prix after a heavy Friday practice crash at Assen left him with a fracture in his T7 vertebrae. MotoGP medical director Dr. Angel Charte declared Aldeguer unfit to continue, and Gresini Racing confirmed he would take no further part in the event. The #54 rider went down at Turns 11 and 12 while riding his Ducati GP25, then left the track for additional checks at a hospital as the team assessed chest and back injuries. His place in the rest of the weekend had been in doubt before the final call came down, but the ruling ended his participation in the Dutch round. The crash brought another setback in a season that had already started in difficult fashion for Aldeguer, who had missed winter testing and the opening round because of a broken femur. That missed time mattered again at Assen, where he arrived trying to build on a solid run of form and instead had to watch the weekend move on without him. Aldeguer had collected 76 points after nine rounds and sat ninth in the championship standings. His best result of the season came with a second-place finish at the Catalan Grand Prix last month. The injury now puts another pause on that momentum and leaves Gresini with one rider ruled out before the Dutch Grand Prix had fully settled into race weekend pace.

Dutch GP practice

Aldeguer’s exit shaped a rough practice session at Assen for Gresini and for MotoGP’s medical staff, who had to sort through the fallout from a violent Friday crash. The impact at the fast Turns 11 and 12 led to concerns over both chest and back injuries, and the hospital checks confirmed the fracture that ended his weekend. That chain of events moved quickly from uncertainty to a full withdrawal, with Charte’s ruling and Gresini’s confirmation closing the door on any return. The crash also stood out because Aldeguer had come into the Dutch Grand Prix with some recent success behind him. His second place at the Catalan Grand Prix showed the pace was there when the bike and rider were both healthy. Assen instead became a reminder of how fragile that progress can be in MotoGP, where one mistake in practice can reshape an entire event. Another rider also had a difficult run on Friday. Alex Marquez crashed during practice as well, but he reported only scratches after the fall. He still picked up a contusion to his right shoulder and abrasions to his left arm, and his shoulder X-ray came back negative. Marquez was due to be reviewed before FP2 to decide whether he could continue, which left his status open for the next session. The contrast between the two crashes underlined the split outcome from the same practice hour. Aldeguer was sent out of the weekend with a vertebra fracture. Marquez had damage, but the early signs pointed to a possible return.
