  • Manufacturers push one-bike MotoGP rule for 2027

MotoGP manufacturers push one-bike-per-rider rule for 2027, sparking safety and sporting concerns

Manufacturers have proposed limiting each premier-class rider to a single bike from 2027 as a cost-cutting measure, a plan now being assessed by the championship promoter and Liberty Media as part of negotiations for the 2027–2031 Concorde Agreement. The change would remove the current two-bike option that allows riders to run divergent set-up directions and to swap machines in flag-to-flag races, and it would likely end flag-to-flag racing in its present form. Organizers and teams have discussed alternatives to manage changing weather and tire needs, including reintroducing mandatory red-flag stops or adopting garage pit stops with mandatory minimum times similar to WorldSBK, since typical flag-to-flag bike swaps are sub-three-second operations and would be impractical under a one-bike limit.

The proposal raises safety and sporting concerns because riders would have no spare machine available in practice or qualifying if they crash, and teams would lose the instant fallback that two bikes provide. Reports cite the Catalan Grand Prix, saying Pedro Acosta and race winner Fabio Di Giannantonio would have been unable to restart after damaging their primary bikes under a one-bike rule. Comparisons have been made to Moto2 and Moto3, which have used a one-bike model since 2010, and to WorldSBK, where teams can keep an uncertified spare in the truck that requires technical-inspector authorization if a major component is damaged. It remains unclear whether teams would be allowed to assemble a backup machine from truck spares or exactly how any new pit-stop procedure would be written, and organizers have not quantified projected savings.

The plan has prompted pushback and controversy during negotiations. Yamaha, Aprilia and KTM reportedly boycotted a factories meeting at Jerez, several rider announcements for 2027 have been delayed, and fans voiced strong criticism on social media, with some saying “this isn’t F1” and others drawing parallels to Formula 1’s 2008 spare-car ban. Any amendment to the two-bikes-per-rider rule would need a formal vote and approval by the Grand Prix Commission, and manufacturers’ objections and ongoing talks mean the proposal remains contested and could change before any adoption for the 2027–2031 period.

  • World of Outlaws, NOS and Hy-Vee set 3-race, 4-day swing

World of Outlaws, NOS and Hy-Vee set 3-race, 4-day swing

The World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series will stage a compact Memorial Day weekend swing of three races in four days, and organizers highlighted a high-stakes payout structure. Organizers announced the two holiday weekend nights, the Stars and Stripes Salute at Knoxville Raceway and the stop at Huset’s Speedway, will carry $20,000 winner paychecks; a separate report described each night of the three-race swing as carrying a $20,000 winner’s payout.

The swing opens midweek with the Hy-Vee Perks 40 at Jacksonville Speedway in Illinois on Thursday, May 21, moves to the Stars and Stripes Salute at Knoxville Raceway in Iowa on Saturday, May 23, and concludes at Huset’s Speedway in Brandon, South Dakota, on Sunday, May 24. Organizers framed the schedule as a condensed, three-race, three-track, three-state road trip and reiterated the series’ partnerships with NOS Energy Drink and Hy-Vee.

Organizers said the $20,000-per-night payouts are intended to create a high-stakes finish to the weekend for series regulars and one-off entrants. Jacksonville brings its own storylines: only two current full-time World of Outlaws drivers have previously won there. Carson Macedo won at Jacksonville in 2019 driving the Kyle Larson Racing No. 2 and has posted fourth, fourth and third-place finishes while racing with Jason Johnson Racing. David Gravel won Jacksonville’s 2024 ‘race of the year’ and has finished no worse than fifth in three outings since joining Big Game Motorsports in the No. 2. Michael ‘Buddy’ Kofoid and Spencer Bayston have also reached Victory Lane at Jacksonville’s quarter-mile in POWRi Midget competition.

  • Toprak posts strong Barcelona M1 test, eyes Mugello

Toprak posts strong Barcelona M1 test, eyes Mugello

Toprak Razgatlioglu showed clear progress adapting to MotoGP on Yamaha’s updated M1 at the post-race Barcelona test. He completed 45 laps, the most of any rider, and said he really liked the new chassis because it improved corner entry, rear grip and consistency. Pramac team principal Gino Borsoi said the data show Toprak is learning to ride like Fabio Quartararo in many corners. The team ran the updated chassis and aerodynamic upgrades during the test, and Razgatlioglu said he is likely to race the updated package at Mugello on May 29-31.

Significant weaknesses remained on one lap and in race trim. Razgatlioglu could not unlock peak pace on Michelin’s soft tire, a dedicated soft-tire time attack left him 19th and last on the timesheets, about 1.257 seconds off the top. He crashed in Q1 at the Catalan GP and race officials demoted him from 15th to 16th after a tire-pressure penalty that cost him points. His race best lap was 0.630 seconds slower than the race winner, Fabio di Giannantonio, though it was within 0.2 seconds of teammate Fabio Quartararo’s best. Pramac and Razgatlioglu trace the shortfall to muscle memory from his World Superbike style, which biases him toward demanding exit grip rather than holding corner speed on the soft compound. After six rounds he sits 22nd in the championship.

Yamaha and Pramac said they will continue developing the M1, but straight-line speed remains a clear limitation. Yamaha managing director Paolo Pavesio warned Razgatlioglu is at “rock bottom” with the YZR-M1, but said the rider can adapt over time and must internalize adjustments. There is no confirmed engine update to fix the V4’s top-speed deficit, and the team said they hope to address straight-line issues with further updates and setup work. Feedback on Yamaha’s aerodynamic package was mixed, Jack Miller and Fabio Quartararo responded positively while several riders disliked the new front aero and said it needs more development. The Barcelona test was interrupted by a midday rain shower that limited running; Pedro Acosta set the fastest lap at 1:38.767 and Quartararo was second on 1:38.831.

  • Weikert Memorial moved to July 25-26; $100K contingent

Weikert Memorial moved to July 25-26; $100K contingent

Port Royal Speedway canceled the three-day Bob Weikert Memorial that had been scheduled for May 22–24 and rescheduled the event for the weekend of July 25–26. Track officials said the $100,000-to-win Weikert’s Livestock 410 sprint car finale set for July 26 will be paid only if the July 25 program is successfully completed, and that a reduced purse for July 26 will be announced if July 25 is not completed. The July 25 program will pay $10,000-to-win.

Organizers had planned the May weekend as the Bob Weikert Memorial presented by Greencastle Livestock Market Inc., headlined by Interstate Batteries High Limit Racing, with $10,000-to-win sprint car programs on Friday and Saturday and the $100,000-to-win finale on Sunday. The planned May schedule included a rain date of Monday, May 25, gates opening at 4:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, hot laps at 6:15 p.m. and racing at 7:30 p.m., a noon gate on Sunday, and fan activities such as racing simulators, cow patty bingo, a cornhole tournament, live music and historic sprint car displays. Daily Port Royal Speedway Ministries kids’ gift-bag raffles were also scheduled.

Track officials said they canceled the May dates after working with Interstate Batteries High Limit Racing and the Weikert family because forecasts called for heavy rain and unusually low temperatures that made it impractical to stage an event of this magnitude. Officials said they moved quickly to avoid unnecessary expenses for fans, teams and traveling personnel and that safety and financial fairness guided the decision. Fans who purchased reserved seats or camping through MyRacePass will receive automatic refunds. Ticket pricing for the planned May dates had listed general admission for Friday and Saturday at $30, students 13–17 at $20, kids 12 and under free and pit admission $40; Sunday pricing had been reserved $50, general $45, students $20, kids free and pit $55.

Logan Schuchart ends 64-race skid with Eldora win

Logan Schuchart snapped a 64-race winless streak at Eldora Speedway, dedicating the victory to his grandfather and Shark Racing leader Bobby Allen. The win was Schuchart’s first World of Outlaws victory of the season and came in a feature he beat Brady Bacon. One report listed his car as the No. 1a. Another listed it as the No. 1S.

The stop at Eldora was the World of Outlaws tour’s first visit to the track since Allen’s fall death. Allen had a long association with Eldora, including winning the inaugural World of Outlaws race there in 1978.

The result marked a turnaround for Shark Racing after five finishes outside the top 10 in the team’s previous six starts. Schuchart finished fifth at Eldora the previous night and called the half-mile dirt oval his “sanctuary.” Eldora has been a career stronghold for him, highlighted by his million-dollar sprint car win at the track in 2023. Schuchart said the victory provided valuable setup notes as Shark Racing shifts focus toward the Kings Royal at Eldora on July 17-18, and the win should give the team momentum as the World of Outlaws tour continues at Jacksonville Speedway on May 21, Knoxville Raceway on May 23 and Huset’s Speedway on May 24.

Reutzel Wins Wire-to-Wire at Grandview, Extends Lead

Aaron Reutzel extended his Interstate Batteries High Limit division championship lead with a wire-to-wire victory at Grandview Speedway in Bechtelsville, Pennsylvania. Driving the Ridge & Sons Racing PowerPlus No. 87 from the pole, Reutzel led all 35 laps and collected the $20,000 winner’s purse. The win raised his series points total to 906 and extended his advantage to 33 points over Rico Abreu, while also moving him seven points clear in the Roto-Rooter Midweek Series standings over Tyler Courtney.

Rico Abreu briefly powered to the front on Lap 28, but a red flag nullified the pass and allowed Reutzel to regain the top spot. Reutzel called it a difficult race, saying, “It was a hard race, I got lucky on that win.” Abreu, in the Tony Stewart/Curb-Agajanian Racing Carquest Auto Parts No. 24, was scored second after the caution. The result marked Abreu’s fifth straight Grandview podium and gave Tony Stewart Racing its seventh consecutive top-10 finish.

The Grandview victory was Reutzel’s fifth High Limit win this season and his seventh overall, and it was his fifth win in the last eight races, a stretch over which he averaged a 1.75 finish and earned $105,000. Chase Dietz finished third for a career-best Grandview result, Kasey Kahne was fourth and Brady Bacon finished fifth. The series’ next marquee event is the $100,000 Bob Weikert Memorial at Port Royal Speedway, scheduled for May 22–24.

Toronto Rock win 7th NLL title, tie Bandits’ mark

The Toronto Rock won the 2026 National Lacrosse League championship, capturing the franchise’s seventh NLL title and its first since May 15, 2011. The victory tied Toronto with the Buffalo Bandits for the most NLL championships and brought the 2026 season to a close.

Toronto defeated the Halifax Thunderbirds in two straight games to secure the NLL Cup. Game 1, at TD Coliseum in Hamilton, ended 13-11 after the Rock rallied from a 9-5 deficit, scoring eight of the final 10 goals and holding Halifax scoreless for roughly 24 minutes. Jason Knox recorded a hat trick in Game 1.

Toronto closed the series with a 12-7 victory in Game 2 at Scotiabank Centre in Halifax. Rookie Sam English was named Finals MVP after contributing three goals, four assists, 19 loose balls and two caused turnovers while recording no penalties, becoming the first rookie to win the award since John Tavares in 1992. Veteran goalie Nick Rose made 72 saves across the two games and finished Game 2 by keeping Halifax scoreless for the final 28 minutes and 32 seconds.

Long-time teammates Rose, Billy Hostrawser, Brad Kri, Latrell Harris, Dan Craig, Josh Jubenville and captain Challen Rogers, along with coach Matt Sawyer, celebrated their first championship together. Coenen twins to contest three AMA rounds for KTM

KTM confirmed that 19-year-old Belgian twins Lucas and Sacha Coenen will contest three rounds of the 2026 AMA Pro Motocross season in the United States as wild-card entries. The brothers are entered for the Thunder Valley National in Lakewood, Colorado on June 13, the Southwick National in Massachusetts on July 11, and the Ironman National finale on August 29.

KTM and Red Bull KTM framed the plan as a coordination between Red Bull KTM de Carli Racing (MXGP) and American Red Bull KTM Factory Racing to give the young riders select U.S. exposure without interrupting their world championship campaigns, and the entries are conditional on how each rider’s MXGP and MX2 schedules progress. Lucas will ride KTM machinery in the 450MX class on a 450, and Sacha will compete on a 250 in the 250MX class. Both riders will remain entered in their respective FIM Motocross World Championship classes while contesting the AMA rounds.

Lucas leads the MXGP standings after five rounds and Sacha sits second in MX2, with outlets varying on precise points margins and win totals. Some outlets noted the Thunder Valley date coincides with an MXGP round in France the same weekend, and KTM said the U.S. plan is intended to fit around the world championship calendar. The announcement followed earlier reports and social posts from motocross outlets and journalists, and Red Bull KTM described parts of the plan as provisional depending on each rider’s 2026 world championship progress. The twins signed a multi-year deal with Red Bull KTM earlier in 2026, both have strong recent form in MXGP and MX2, and both have expressed a desire to eventually race full-time in the United States.

Verstappen shoves Engel onto grass in Nürburgring 24H duel

Max Verstappen shoved Maro Engel onto the grass during a late-night wheel-to-wheel battle for the lead at the Nürburgring 24 Hours, a forceful move that included multiple contacts and a near-miss that almost sent Engel off track. Verstappen, in the #3 car, closed on Engel’s #80 and forced a move down the Döttinger Straight that pushed Engel onto the grass approaching Tiergarten amid lapped traffic. The clash produced no major crash, and Engel described it as a misunderstanding caused by traffic, saying there was no damage and that he and Verstappen even laughed about the incident afterward.

Engel and his co-drivers Luca Stolz, Fabian Schiller and Maxime Martin secured the win for Mercedes, marking the manufacturer’s first Nürburgring 24 Hours victory since 2016 and finishing about 46 seconds clear of the next car. Verstappen’s bid for victory ended when a driveshaft failure dropped his #3 entry to 38th place.

The episode followed a year-old online dispute over a GT3 Nordschleife lap time attributed to Verstappen under the alias “Franz Hermann,” a matter Engel later said included incorrect information about a 7:48 DTM-spec run. Mercedes and team principal Toto Wolff cited Verstappen’s risky on-track moment when they and other Formula 1 teams blocked junior driver Kimi Antonelli from attending the Nürburgring next year, a move described as a precautionary, governance-style decision. Engel has been reported to be in close contact with Antonelli about a possible future entry and has attempted to recruit him, even as both drivers downplayed any personal rivalry after the clash. Verstappen said he would “try” to return to the Nürburgring 24 Hours in 2027 depending on his schedule.
