Lucas Coenen Sets Fast 450 Pace in Southwick Qualifying

The Crestview Construction Southwick National served as Round 6 of the 2026 AMA Pro Motocross Championship, and its first motos marked the midpoint of the 22-race summer schedule. Southwick was the series’ only predominantly sandy track, and Hunter Lawrence arrived with the red plate after winning at RedBud, carrying a two-point lead over his younger brother Jett Lawrence into the event.

The 250 class took a hit before racing after points leader Jo Shimoda was ruled out following a collarbone fracture and a mild concussion in second qualifying. Sacha Coenen led the 250 field as the Coenen brothers returned to competition.

In 450 qualifying, Lucas Coenen topped the session by a full second over Jorge Prado, setting the pace on a demanding Southwick layout.

Aaron Plessinger to miss two Pro Motocross rounds after RedBud crash

Aaron Plessinger will miss the next two rounds of Pro Motocross while he recovers from a tailbone injury sustained in a first-turn crash at RedBud last Saturday. Red Bull KTM said Plessinger, who was hurt in 450MX Moto 1, required stitches after the fall and has been cleared of fractures. His injuries left him with significant bruising and a cut around the tailbone area.

Plessinger is expected to sit out the Southwick round on July 11 and Spring Creek on July 17. His condition will be reassessed before Round 8 at Washougal on July 25, with a final decision on his return to be made closer to race day. As of Wednesday, there was no update on whether he would be cleared for Southwick.

Plessinger said he was relieved the injury was not more serious and hopes to return once the wound heals. The RedBud crash was another setback in his 2026 season, after he finished fifth overall at High Point, his best result of the year. He is currently 10th in the 450MX standings.

Hunter Lawrence wins RedBud 450 as foreign sweep makes history

RedBud’s Pro Motocross National, Round 5, drew large holiday crowds to RedBud MX in Buchanan, Michigan, on July 4 as hot, muddy conditions and a patriotic Fourth of July setting defined the day. Fans watched from RVs, pickup trucks, hillsides and walkways, and the gallery also showed the national anthem, merchandise lines and patriotic fans. Heavy rain and wind on Friday had disrupted activities and left the track soft or muddy.

In the 450 class, Australia’s Hunter Lawrence won overall, with Spain’s Jorge Prado second and Jett Lawrence third, marking the first time the class’s top three finishers were all non-Americans. Haiden Deegan was the top American in sixth and was brought onstage to wave the flag. After his win, Hunter Lawrence celebrated with fans and sprayed champagne on the crowd at the podium.

In the 250 class, Cole Davies won the race, Ryder DiFrancesco finished third and called the result his first career pro motocross podium on America’s birthday. Jo Shimoda took second after winning RedBud’s 250 race in 2025, and he said the crowd’s energy made racing in the U.S. feel like a dream come true.

RedBud weekend pairs amateur combine with Pro Motocross return

The weekend at RedBud MX in Michigan begins Friday, July 3, with the first SMX Next, Motocross Scouting Moto Combine of the summer, a showcase for 25 of the country’s top amateur A and B class prospects. Riders were selected with input from Honda, Husqvarna, Kawasaki, KTM, Suzuki, Triumph and Yamaha, and they will race two 25-minute-plus-one-lap motos to determine a winner and overall podium. The program also includes classroom instruction on health, fitness, nutrition and media, along with coaching from Broc Glover, Kevin Windham, Michael Byrne and Gareth Swanepoel. SMX Next is part of a year-round talent pipeline that has helped produce pro standouts such as Haiden Deegan, and the combine is tied directly to the RedBud weekend through a 10-minute practice session at Saturday’s National.

The 53rd running of the 5.11 RedBud National follows on Saturday, July 4, as the Pro Motocross Championship returns from its summer break. MX Sports Pro Racing described the race as a key midpoint in the outdoor season and part of the 2026 Monster Energy SMX World Championship, with the holiday timing and RedBud’s reputation for fast, technical racing helping make it one of motocross’s most popular stops. The event also comes during America’s 250th anniversary year, and company president Davey Coombs said the next races should help clarify how the championships will unfold.

The 250SMX Class arrives at RedBud with a tight points battle after four different winners in the first four races. Monster Energy Pro Circuit Kawasaki’s Levi Kitchen holds the red plate and leads Honda HRC Progressive’s Jo Shimoda by one point, Red Bull KTM Factory Racing’s Julien Beaumer by two, and Monster Energy Yamaha Star Racing’s Cole Davies by seven. Davies earned his first Pro Motocross victory before RedBud, while Shimoda has won both of his previous RedBud starts and also took last year’s race there. Coverage of the weekend begins early Saturday, with on-track action at 5 a.m. PT, Peacock streaming at 7 a.m. PT and moto coverage at 10 a.m. PT.

Seth Hammaker Tops 250MX Qualifying at Hangtown, Keeps 13-Point Championship Lead

Round 2 of the 2026 AMA Pro Motocross, the Hangtown Pro Motocross at Prairie City SVRA in Rancho Cordova, saw qualifying set the starting gates and frame expectations for the motos. In 450MX qualifying Jett Lawrence took pole with a lap of 1:49.886, Haiden Deegan was second-fastest at 1:50.389 and Jorge Prado third at 1:50.543. Hunter Lawrence fell during the second qualifying session but still posted the fourth-fastest time of 1:50.797, while Justin Cooper was fifth-fastest in 1:51.014. In 250MX qualifying Seth Hammaker topped the charts with a 1:52.621 lap as he entered the Hangtown weekend 13 points clear in the 250 championship. Ryder DiFrancesco was second-fastest in 1:52.871, Jo Shimoda third in 1:52.950, with Cole Davies and Levi Kitchen listed just behind the top three.

The weekend arrived with key championship and injury storylines shaping expectations for race day. Hunter Lawrence held a six-point lead over Jorge Prado after last week’s season opener. Jett Lawrence remained hampered by a pre-supercross leg and ankle injury. Eli Tomac was sidelined after a crash and Malcolm Stewart was out with a twisted knee. Haiden Deegan had made his 450 debut last week, posting a 5-4 score for fifth overall. Track preparation at Hangtown featured rice hulls that were holding moisture and a revised layout that included an uphill roller, a big middle triple and a larger Fly 150. Morning temperatures were in the 60s with a forecast high near 84.

Press-day coverage and fan previews arrived ahead of the motos. TransWorld Motocross posted two short YouTube videos with rider impressions and a first look at the Hangtown track, presenting the material as preview content rather than race coverage. In WMX action from earlier, defending champion Lala Turner holeshot and crashed in moto one but charged back to pass Charli Cannon on the final lap, with moto two scheduled for today.

Justin Barcia skips High Point to recover from back injury

Justin Barcia will miss this weekend’s High Point National, round four of the Pro Motocross Championship, after aggravating a back injury in qualifying at Thunder Valley last weekend. Troy Lee Designs Red Bull Ducati Factory Racing said Barcia compressed his back after dabbing his leg in a corner, then raced Moto 1 before pain intensified and kept him from starting Moto 2.

Team manager Josh Wisenor said Barcia gave everything he had at Thunder Valley and that the team’s priority is getting him healthy.

Dylan Ferrandis will represent the team in Barcia’s place at High Point. Barcia entered the weekend 15th in the 450 class standings after three rounds, with his best Pro Motocross finish this season a 10th at round two. He is in his 18th Pro Motocross season and previously missed most of Monster Energy Supercross after an opening-round crash before returning for the final three rounds.

Lachlan Turner sweeps Thunder Valley for second straight WMX win

Lachlan “Lala” Turner dominated Round 2 of the 2026 Women’s Motocross Championship at Thunder Valley Motocross Park in Colorado, sweeping both motos for the overall win and her second straight victory to start the season. Turner rode a Yamaha YZ250F, went 1-1 on the day, and extended her moto-winning streak to seven dating to last season. She also overcame a crash in moto 2 and a fourth-place start in moto 1, and a 10-point penalty for jumping a red cross flag did not alter the finishing order.

Charli Cannon was Turner’s closest challenger and finished second overall with 2-2 results on a Honda CRF250R Works Edition. Cannon qualified fastest, crashed in moto 1 and raced through shoulder pain, then briefly led moto 2 before Turner repassed her and won by 2.7 seconds. Turner won Friday’s moto by 27.8 seconds.

Turner left Thunder Valley leading Cannon by four points in the championship standings, with McCutcheon third, 17 points behind Turner.
